As of January 1st, 2021, POD is no longer contracted with Children’s Health. We are using a new service and must now charge our patients an after hours call fee, since we are charged for our after hours RN’s. As always, there is zero charge during regular business hours.

Carseats and coats It's a natural parental instinct to want to keep your child warm and bundled while traveling. However, it is important NOT to put your child's coat on before buckling them in the carseat. The bulky padding in your child's coat can compress with the force of a crash, which would allow your child to move within the carseat harness, thus increasing risk for severe injury.

strep-throat Our staff gets asked this question a lot. There is no right answer. So, how do you choose a plan? You may be able to make a more informed decision, by answering the following questions.

How much will the premium cost you? The premium is the monthly fee for the cost of the insurance. Usually, if the premium is high, your out of pocket expense should be lower, i.e. lower deductible or a copay plan instead of a deductible.

If you are looking to cut down on the cost of your monthly premium, a high deductible health plan (HDHP) may be the right option. Many HDHP have lower monthly premiums and some have a health savings account (HSA) attached to them. A HSA allows you to set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for any out of pocket expense. Additionally, many employers will also contribute to your HSA account.

strep-throat What is strep throat?

Strep throat is the common term for streptococcal pharyngitis. Pharyngitis means an inflammation or infection of the throat. Strep refers to the causative bacteria – group A streptococcus. The group A Streptococcus bacteria can also cause skin infections. Interestingly, there are other types of strep bacteria but only group A causes throat infections.

What symptoms are common with strep throat?
Children may present with a variety of complaints including sore throat, pain while swallowing, tender lymph nodes in the neck and fever. Some children will have a rash. It is not uncommon to complain of stomach ache or headaches. You may notice bad breath.

urgent-care Only if it's after hours and if you've talked with our after hours nurse. Most illnesses can safely wait until the following day, and our nurse advice line can help you decide. If the nurse refers you to an urgent care center, ER, or follow up in our office the following day, there is no charge for the call.

If you're concerned about poison exposure, call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222. Do not wait for your child to act or look sick.

autism Lucky for the pediatrician, many parents are increasingly interested in childhood development and are knowledgeable on "ages and stages" or the appropriate development of a normal child. Much of the well child check up is devoted to tracking a child's development in gross motor, fine motor, language and cognitive skills. And high on the radar of many parents is Autism Spectrum Disorder. Rightly so, as it has become a more frequent diagnosis in the past 20 years and various studies pinpoint the frequency between 1 in 50 and 1 in 400 children, with a male predominance of 4:1.
